Tasca do Chico

Place · Lisbon

The Tasca do Chico is a small restaurant on the Travessa da Espera in Bairro Alto, Lisbon. It is owned by a man named Pedro Correia, who has run the establishment since 1997 and who has, in the last six years, gradually transferred its day-to-day operation to his son. The son's girlfriend, Margarida, has been working behind the bar since 2024. Her uncle sits on the union committee at the port.

The Tasca opens at six in the evening and closes when there is no one left who wants to be there. It smells, by the consistent report of its patrons, of grilled mackerel and old paper. The compiler of this archive has filed fourteen Friday columns from a small table in its back room without, on any of those Fridays, leaving Bairro Alto.

The Tasca is not, by any record available to the compiler, of interest to the institution. The institution has not been asked to confirm.

Filed: Lisbon, autumn 2026. Cross-reference: Margarida, the port strike.
